Leaving the comfort of home is a daunting yet exhilarating experience, especially when that home is as amazing as Austin, Texas. Attending college in my hometown is fantastic for many reasons. I get to see my family every week, my dogs are just a five-minute drive from my apartment and I know all the best spots for my favorite activities. However, the itch to leave and explore beyond familiar horizons is always present.
For me, the decision to venture abroad was always exciting and I’ve harbored a desire to study in Spain since middle school. Having spent a little over a month here, I can confidently affirm that it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. This journey has been unforgettable and there’s still so much to experience during my time here.
I found myself immersed in a new life at a small Catholic university where my professors, all hailing from Spain, became my guides to understanding not only academia but also a rich tapestry of culture and tradition.
Enrolling in classes like “Problem of God,” “Current International Issues from a Spanish Perspective,” and “Intro to Religious Studies,” I had no idea what to expect. My classes are small, ranging from 10 to 30 people and the expertise and passion of my professors is remarkable. I’ve learned so much in such a short period, but the most significant lesson so far is how Spain’s history is interwoven into every facet of daily life here. From the current political situation to the different kinds of foods you’ll find in markets, the echoes of Spain’s past remain intact, offering profound insights into the nation’s identity and shaping the experiences of its people.
Beyond the confines of the classroom, my exploration of Spain has taken me on captivating day trips to cities like Toledo, Segovia, Ávila and Barcelona. Each destination revealed a mosaic of differences in people, food, traditions and architecture, painting a vivid picture of the country’s diverse heritage. Stepping into various museums, cathedrals and historical buildings provided insights into the drastic differences between different cities in Spain.
Despite being just a short train ride away from Madrid, they offer entirely different experiences. These journeys not only enrich my cultural knowledge but also fuel my sense of wonder and adventure.
Yet, amidst the grandeur of historical landmarks and bustling city streets, it is the small moments and gestures that truly capture the essence of Spanish life. I particularly enjoy observing the leisurely pace of the “slow life,” as people indulge in midday breaks and linger over long meals with no rush to leave the table. The warmth and friendliness of the locals reflected in their simple greetings of “Buenos días/tardes/noches” and genuine smiles, have fostered a sense of belonging in a new country.
Making friends through my program not only amplified the joy of discovery but also deepened my adoration for diverse cultures. Meeting people from France, the Netherlands, Germany, China, etc., has been incredibly enlightening as I learn about their customs and traditions. Each encounter is a celebration of cultural exchange, enriching my experience and widening my perspective on the world.
Living abroad, away from the familiarity of home, has sparked a new sense of gratitude within me. It has ignited a sense of adventure and curiosity, urging me to embrace every moment.
