From a young age, traveling abroad with family has been both frequent and familiar. Exploring foreign cities such as Tokyo and Paris not only introduced me to life-changing experiences, but has also given me a unique perspective. Enrolling for a maymester and studying abroad for the first time was a big step. One could even say daunting.
Getting to Portugal was quite a challenge, but after two plane cancellations and six hours of waiting, my maymester classmates and I finally arrived in the beautiful city called Porto.
In class, we learn about International Perspectives on Biomedical Engineering Design, but out of class we learn about Porto’s rich culture. The opportunities for cultural exploration have been endless. Who knew I’d be taking cooking classes and traditional dance lessons in Portugal?!?
Our class of 16 students have bonded so quickly, it seems like we have all known each other for years. Exploring the new city together as a team, riding the metro to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto (FEUP) for class, and tasting unseen/unique foods, we have become a family. I am excited to spend the next few weeks with them.
Looking back I know that I made the correct decision to enroll in this maymester, and hope that everyone will be able to experience studying abroad at least once in their lifetime. Here are some photos that I have taken so far:
I can’t wait to experience more of Portugal’s fascinating culture and learn more about myself and my perspective as an American too. Looking forward to sharing more about my trip in the future.
Till next time!!
