Hi, I’m Xiuqiang Deng, a dual major in economics and sociology from The University of Texas at Austin. I’m currently studying at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, as part of the Texas Global Education Abroad program.
In this post, I’ll share thoughts about my journey and what it’s like to be immersed in academic and cultural experiences at one of China’s top universities.
Academic Experiences
At Fudan University, I’ve had the opportunity to dive into courses like Internet Economics, Social Change and Econometrics.
These courses have significantly expanded my understanding of how digital economies transform global markets while also helping me explore the deep-rooted social changes occurring in China and beyond.
The combination of theoretical learning and real-world case studies has been particularly valuable in developing a nuanced understanding of the modern economy and societal shifts.
For example, in my Internet Economics class, I’ve gained insights into how digital platforms, e-commerce and the Internet reshape consumer behavior and business models.
The Social Change course has deepened my appreciation of China’s sociocultural transformations, especially in the context of economic reforms. Finally, Econometrics has allowed me to apply statistical tools to better analyze economic data, making this academic journey both intellectually stimulating and practical.
Additionally, my time at Xianghui Hall has provided a unique academic environment to enrich my learning experience further. As one of Fudan’s iconic spaces for intellectual exchange, it has hosted numerous lectures and discussions that deepened my appreciation for how academic and cultural dialogues intersect.
Engaging in discussions at Xianghui Hall allowed me to broaden my perspectives on global and domestic issues, which tied seamlessly into the topics covered in my courses.
Cultural Adventures
One of the most exciting aspects of studying abroad is discovering the local culture. I’ve had the opportunity to visit the Bund, a historical waterfront in Shanghai, and participate in Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations — such as the College Lantern Festival — with classmates.
Engaging with local students has opened my eyes to the nuances of Chinese culture, from the importance of tea to their perspectives on global issues.
I’ve also learned a lot from conversations with my peers about how living in a rapidly evolving society like China influences their views on economic development and social change.
Time Management and Personal Growth
Balancing coursework with the temptation to explore Shanghai’s vibrant city life has been challenging, but I’ve found that careful planning helps me enjoy both.
On top of that, participating in Fudan University’s 100 Societies Recruitment has added another layer of opportunity. With so many student organizations to explore, from academic clubs to cultural and social groups, finding new interests and building connections outside of the classroom has been exciting.
Studying at Fudan University has been an enriching experience that I’ll carry with me long after I return to UT Austin. I’ve gained new perspectives on economic policy, sustainable development and the ways technological advances shape modern societies.
I’ve also grown personally by navigating life in a new culture. I look forward to bringing this knowledge back to Texas, sharing it with my peers and contributing to discussions on global development and social change.
