For the past month and a half, I have been studying sustainability and environmental justice in Lisbon, Portugal. The classes I am taking cover a wide range of topics relating to sustainability and the environment, allowing me to learn more about what I am most passionate about.

Through the program, I’ve visited several environmental organizations, waste management sites, natural parks, and small-scale organic farms and markets. However, I haven’t just learned about environmental, social, and economic sustainability; I’ve also learned how to live more sustainably while immersing myself in the culture here.

Back home, I’m used to waking up, maybe grabbing a quick coffee to go and rushing to class while staring at my phone. I never felt truly present during my days, and there never seemed to be a reason to slow down.

Here, it’s different. I wake up in the morning to my window open, blowing cool air in with sunlight hitting my face. I take my time walking to class, enjoying every street and tiled building I pass.

I don’t walk with my phone in my hand (unless I’m looking for directions). And I sit down in coffee shops, not just to do work, but to talk to my friends and have a good time. I take in every moment and feel complete gratitude for even being here.

While living in Lisbon, I’ve learned that there is no reason to rush through life. Embracing the slower pace here has allowed me to truly experience the people, culture, and everyday moments that make this journey so meaningful. Being here has taught me that living sustainably isn’t just about protecting the environment; it’s also about slowing down, appreciating new experiences, and being present in every moment.

I am truly grateful for everyone I’ve met on this journey and for the personal growth I have gained from being here. I know I may not remember everything we’ve studied and learned in class, but I will remember these experiences for the rest of my life. Of course, I will also carry with me the most important lesson I’ve learned in Lisbon: to live in a more thoughtful and sustainable way.
