Pre-Departure
Traveling to South Korea has been a dream of mine since I was 13. I was the biggest K-pop fan and had a deep appreciation for the culture and language as a kid. I began studying the language on my own. Eventually, I took the Korean language placement exam at The University of Texas at Austin and decided to make it my minor.
I always wanted to study abroad but couldn’t due to several unexpected circumstances during my sophomore year, so I thought it was too late. Thankfully, everything worked out. I applied to the summer exchange program, and soon, found out I was accepted and would be studying abroad at Yonsei University, one of the top universities in South Korea. I was ecstatic and honestly in disbelief that after all these years, my dreams of visiting South Korea were coming true.
Whimsy and Wonder in Seoul
Arriving in Seoul was like entering a vibrant, bustling playground for the senses. My adventure began with a delightful dive into South Korea’s famed cafe culture. Each cafe offered a unique theme, from cozy book nooks to pet-friendly havens and I spent hours savoring delicious pastries and drinks in these whimsical settings.
Photo booths dotted the city, providing endless fun and a perfect way to capture memories with new friends. My experiences in Seoul’s themed cafes, beanbag movie theaters and karaoke outings were highlights of my trip.
Additionally, participating in events like the Waterbomb music festival and seeing K-Pop artists I’ve admired for years was such a rewarding experience. These whimsical adventures painted a colorful backdrop to my time in Seoul, adding a playful twist to my study abroad experience.
Rich Cultural Experiences
Beyond the whimsical, my time in South Korea was also deeply enriched by cultural immersion.
For example, wearing a “hanbok,” or traditional Korean clothing, at Gyeongbokgung Palace was a surreal experience. Walking through the Gyeongbokgung Palace grounds, I felt a profound connection to Korea’s history and heritage. The intricate architecture and historical significance of the Gyeongbokgung Palace left a lasting impression.
At Yonsei University, taking a language class required a placement test beforehand. I was very nervous since I hadn’t taken a Korean class in two semesters and only studied casually on my own. I took the exam and was pleasantly surprised to be placed in the Intermediate II level. This gave me a huge confidence boost, and I loved the class from the first day.
My Korean language skills were put to the test and improved significantly in class and as I navigated daily life and interacted with locals. Since then, I’ve become much more comfortable and confident in the language due to the Intermediate Level II course I am taking at Yonsei University and my daily interactions. These rich cultural experiences not only enhanced my understanding of Korean traditions but also deepened my appreciation for the country’s history and people.
Self Discovery
Living in Seoul allowed me to learn a lot about myself. I discovered a preference for nature and daytime activities. Seoul’s parks, hiking trails and serene spots provided a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Yet, the evening experiences, including vibrant street performances, karaoke sessions and food adventures, were unforgettable. Engaging in culturally significant activities like karaoke and photo booths helped me step out of my comfort zone, fostering personal growth and self-awareness. Through these diverse experiences, I gained a clearer understanding of my interests and preferences.
Embracing the Seoul Experience
My study abroad journey in Seoul was a mix of whimsy, cultural enrichment and self-discovery. From the playful themed cafes to the majestic Gyeongbokgung Palace, every moment was a unique learning experience.
I leave South Korea with improved language skills, cherished memories and a deeper understanding of myself. For anyone considering studying abroad, I highly recommend embracing every opportunity to explore, learn and grow. Seoul has left an indelible mark on me, and I am grateful for the incredible journey of discovering this beautiful city.
