Studying abroad can shape everyone’s academic journey and personal growth. But for first-generation college students, navigating higher education can seem particularly daunting, and the opportunity to travel and learn in a different cultural context may feel out of reach. Fortunately, the First Abroad Scholarship offers crucial support for first-generation students at The University of Texas at Austin, making international education more accessible.
Studying abroad opens doors to new academic perspectives, enhances language skills and fosters personal development. The experiences you gain while studying in a different country can also boost employability and provide invaluable skills in today’s global job market.
Scholarships like this one help bridge the financial gap that often prevents students from pursuing such opportunities. By alleviating financial concerns, the scholarship encourages first-generation students to step outside their comfort zones, explore diverse cultures and create lifelong memories.
Financial Support via the First Abroad Scholarship
The First Abroad Scholarship provides a one-time award of $3,000 to help first-generation undergraduate students participate in a study abroad program.
Designed specifically for students in their first semester at UT, this scholarship recognizes the unique challenges that first-generation students face, empowering them to seize global learning opportunities.
Each year, the scholarship is awarded to 25 students, enabling them to explore the world and enrich their academic experience without the financial burden that often accompanies such endeavors.
The funds are intended to be used during a student’s standard four-year undergraduate education, promoting early planning and engagement in the study abroad process.

Post-Award Planning
The First Abroad Scholarship is designed as a planning scholarship, meaning that the funds are intended for study abroad experiences during your undergraduate career, starting in Fall 2025. Award notifications will be sent out in January 2025, giving you ample time to finalize your study abroad plans for the following academic year.
Once you’re awarded the scholarship, you can begin exploring various UT-approved study abroad programs. It is essential to research different options, considering factors such as location, academic opportunities and personal interests.
Engaging with your academic advisors and peer mentors who have studied abroad can provide insight and guidance, helping you make informed decisions about the various programs.
Additionally, you should consider how to maximize your study abroad experience. This includes immersing yourself in the local culture, participating in activities outside the classroom, and building connections with fellow students and locals. These experiences not only enrich the academic journey but also foster a greater understanding of the world.
Lasting Impact of an Education Abroad Experience
While studying abroad at the University of Edinburgh, I visited the city of Inverness, which is in the Scottish Highlands. While in Inverness, I got to explore the trails along the Loch Ness Islands and visit Inverness’ famous Leakey’s Bookshop.
Studying abroad at the University of Edinburgh has impacted my life in the best of ways. It has allowed me to forge lifelong friendships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Engaging with classmates from different walks of my life has fostered a sense of global community that I had never experienced before.
Engaging in discussions, attending events and collaborating on projects helped deepen my connections with students from all over the world and create lasting memories. This experience not only enhanced my understanding of the world but also instilled a greater appreciation for diversity, which has enriched my personal and professional relationships back home at the Forty Acres.
The impact of this experience continues to resonate in my life, inspiring me to embrace new cultures and ideas wherever I go.
